Forced Marriage Order for Male Victim

21st August 2018

Forced Marriage Protection Orders were introduced in 2014 as part of a change in the law making it a criminal offence to force a person into marriage. In June this year the first Forced Marriage Order to protect a male victim was secured by South Yorkshire Police.

The 19 year old young man had refused to comply to a pre-arranged marriage agreed by his parents when he was just 5 years old. As a result, the young man had received threats from family members. The young man has 3 younger siblings and  Protection Orders were also obtained for them.

In instances of honour based abuse it is often assumed it only happens to girls and women, however there are also many boys and young men who are victims. Det Insp Suzanne Jackson said the case was a huge step forward.

The recognition that this is not a gender specific issue will have an impact in family law, the ability to secure an annulment and Legal Aid.
