We are pleased to share with you a recent update to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
Legislation has now been passed to abolish the long standing ‘same roof’ rule which has been in place since 1979. This means that if you have suffered physical or sexual abuse inflicted by someone you were living with at the time, you are now eligible to apply, or re-apply, for compensation. This is regardless of when the abuse or assault took place and includes cases of child sexual abuse.
Compensation is still be subject to the existing rules and eligibility requirements of the scheme.
We welcome this new legislation which recognises the unfairness of the previous “same roof” rule and gives those who were previously denied compensation, the chance to re-apply. The Scheme continues to be under review with a focus on the changing nature of violent crime and the recovery of victims. We hope to share further updates with you later in the year.
